Portal San Antonio Day Trip
Day Trip Details
We’ll kick off this day trip after picking you up from your hotel in Ituzaingó. Aboard an off-roading vehicle, we’ll take a 1-hour drive heading southwest. Our final destination? El Portal San Antonio, an area of Iberá Park teeming with grasslands, palm groves, and vegetation adapted to wetlands. Let’s get into explorer mode!
As soon as we arrive, we’ll begin a kayaking tour. We’ll paddle slowly and quietly to blend into the surroundings without disturbing the wildlife. Did you know that Iberá is one of South America’s most important wetlands?
In these waters, we’ll be able to spot endemic birds, capybaras, caimans, black yacarés, herons, and, with a little luck, swamp deer among the vegetation. The best part? We’ll paddle at a time that’s especially good for spotting animals, when many species are still active before seeking refuge from the heat.
As we move along, we’ll learn to identify habitats such as ponds, reed beds, and water hyacinth fields, true biological highways for fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. It’ll be like watching a live nature documentary!
After this tour, it will be time to take a break to enjoy breakfast, which includes traditional pastries, both sweet and savory, served with hot or cold herbal teas.
Next, we’ll take a leisurely walk along the trail known as the Medicinal Trail. There, we’ll see native plants and learn about their traditional uses in Guaraní culture, from aromatic species to vegetation historically used for healing purposes.
After the walk, we’ll return to the off-roading vehicle to head back to your hotel, where we’ll wrap up this 6.5-hour day trip. See you next time!
