Irati Forest & Ochagavía Day Trip
Day Trip Details
At the agreed time, we’ll meet at Pamplona bus station to set off on this day trip into the heart of the Navarrese Pyrenees. We’ll leave the Pamplona basin behind us and, after a journey of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, we’ll enter the Salazar Valley. You’ll fall in love with the scenery from the very first moment!
We’ll arrive at the Irati Forest, one of the best-preserved beech forests in Europe. We’ll walk along its signposted trails whilst admiring its rich biodiversity. Did you know that this forest has remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages? During the walk, we’ll follow the course of the rivers Irati and Urtxuria, whose river system has been key to traditional timber harvesting using rafts.
After a 1.5-hour visit, we’ll resume our journey and reach Ochagavía in 30 minutes. This village, considered one of the prettiest in Navarre, stands out for its traditional Pyrenean architecture, with stone houses, gabled roofs and roofing designed to withstand heavy snowfall.
During a 45-minute guided tour, we’ll explore the historic centre, crossing its stone bridge over the River Anduña. We’ll also admire the Church of St John the Evangelist and the famous sculpture of the Enara of Ochagavía.
Did you know that Ochagavía was an important hub on the transhumance routes linking Navarre with Aragon? After the tour, you’ll have 45 minutes of free time to have lunch and explore the area at your leisure.
Finally, we’ll return to Pamplona, where we’ll say our goodbyes after 7 hours at the original meeting point.
